GUT GEIST is a new food magazine that reimagines German cuisine through a bold, editorial lens. Created by chef Tobias Beck and the team behind Fare, the magazine takes a fresh look at old classics, uncovering the stories, places and personalities behind them.
We designed the magazine identity and layout system for the inaugural issue — a 144-page exploration of Berlin’s rich culinary culture, told through essays, interviews and photo-led features.
Typography choices nod to German street signage, with the magazine’s primary typeface designed by Berlin native Christoph Koeberlin. The cover is embossed with the names of featured eateries, offering a tactile introduction to the stories within.
Playfulness sits at the heart of the visual language. We commissioned renowned German illustrator Christoph Niemann to produce a series of custom drawings including a sticker of one of his original designs with every copy.
We art directed each photoshoot, employing a range of photographic styles to reflect the tone and personality of each location — from traditional imbisses to roadside truck stops.
GUT GEIST is a magazine built to evoke place, not just document it. Its launch has been met with wide acclaim from readers and the food press alike, cementing it as a confident and culturally distinctive new voice in food publishing.
