Mother Root is an alcohol-free aperitif made with just four natural ingredients — fiery ginger, apple cider vinegar, a lick of chilli heat, and blossom honey. Crafted for flavour-first drinkers, it’s bold, refreshing, and completely free from additives or preservatives. Designed to be poured over ice, mixed with soda, and savoured slowly — it tastes like sunshine in a bottle.
The sun became a central metaphor throughout, representing warmth, energy, and uplift. Its form was drawn directly from the letter M in the brand’s name, four letterforms radiating outward to create a custom logomark with iconic simplicity.
Since launching in 2015, the brand has grown a vibrant community of drinkers who value pleasure without compromise. As Mother Root evolved and attitudes towards drinking shifted, their identity needed to speak less about what was being left behind — and more about what was being welcomed in.
Working closely with the team, we developed a rebrand built around their purpose, their people, and their ambition for a more joyful kind of moderation. Internal strategy notes helped shaped the voice — Bold not pushy. Joyful not jolly. Wholebeing not wellbeing with visual inspiration coming from the work of Ellsworth Kelly, Olafur Eliasson and Bruno Munari.
A new bottle became the hero — a central touchpoint that transformed the feel of the product in hand and on shelf. We led the creative direction across packaging design and product photography, and collaborated with Studio SB8 and Tribe on the design and build of the new website.
The rebrand launched to wide acclaim, resonating deeply with both new customers and long-time fans. Mother Root has since secured nationwide retail presence in Waitrose and Ocado, and been nominated for various non-alcoholic beverage awards.
Positioned at the forefront of a fast-growing category, Mother Root is shaping the conversation around what modern drinking culture looks and feels like.
